Signing Day 2012

Source: Jayhawks Football
Signing day always gets my heart going a little faster than usual. I can't quite put it in words, but there is something that just makes it feel like Christmas morning all over again. The day is especially fun when Kansas hauls in a nice handful of good looking recruits, and for the Jayhawks, based on that criteria, signing day 2012 was a success. Although it was a bit overshadowed by the Missouri signing of number 1 recruit, Dorial Green-Beckham (which loomed large over all of America, to be honest), Charlie Weis and company had another good day at the office, getting familiar names and even a few surprises to dot the line at the last minute.

Out of all of Weis's recruits that signed their LOIs, only 2 were retained from Turner Gill's preliminary commitment list: TE Jordan Smith and OL Brian Beckmann. A few of the notable losses were QBs Seth Russell (Baylor) and Bilal Marshall (Purdue), and LB/DE DeJon Wilson (Colorado). That is natural, because attrition is bound to happen after a coaching change.

Weis mentioned in his press-conference that the class is far from over because he expects more 5th year, special-case transfers to join the team in the spring. I have a list of names that I have in mind, but let's not spoil the moment; instead, let's focus back in on the guys who committed themselves today.

I don't really want to rank the recruits (for obvious reasons), but what the heck, I gotta give you something of substance, right? First thing is first, though: let me run the numbers.

The class (20) breaks down like so:

High School: 9
Junior College: 8
Transfers: 3

And they come from all over the country:

Texas: 6
California: 3
Kansas: 2
Missouri: 2
Washington: 2
Florida: 1
Georgia: 1
Ohio: 1
Maryland: 1
South Carolina: 1

There are 11 offensive players:

QB: 3
RB: 1
OL: 2
WR: 3
TE: 2

And 9 defensive players:

DL: 4
LB: 2
DB: 3

If you were to ask me what the major weaknesses of last year's team were, then I would tell you:

1. DL- no depth, little talent
2. WR- excellent slot receivers, but no true deep threat
3. QB- production regressed throughout the year
4. LB- aside from Steven Johnson, nobody could be relied upon for 60 minutes

Wouldn't you know it, Charlie Weis signed 12 players out of those categories. Now I know (and you probably do too) that Charlie Weis has forgot more about football than I could ever know. Hear me out: I'm not claiming to know more than him, nor will I ever, but with that said, we still agree on some things, like shoring up the depleted defensive line and wide-outs.

Also, with only 9 high school recruits signed, Weis is basically saying that Kansas needs help all over the field... immediately. High schoolers are generally (and I want to qualify that statement...generally) big projects that require a good year to get fully integrated into the system, while Juco and transfer players can come in and win a job in the spring... generally.

So, with that said, I give you my preliminary ranking of the 2012 recruiting class. I will base it on the players' talents, the positions' needs, and how soon I think they can make an impact.

Kansas Jayhawks' 2012 Additions
1. QB Dayne Crist- QB is the single-most important position in Big 12 Football, make no bones about it. Crist is a good one, and he could win Kansas 2-3 games by himself.

2. QB Jake Heaps- It was paramount that Kansas found a quarterback in the offseason. Jordan Webb could have very well been that guy, who cares? Just as long as they had somebody who they could depend on. Heaps gives Kansas 2 more years of great quarterbacking and will give the 1st team defense fits in practice. You could argue that is as big or an even bigger addition that Crist. Suffice it to say, KU upgraded this position.

3. LB Schyler Miles- Steven Johnson leaves some big shoes to fill, so it's a major position of need. Miles chose Kansas over Florida and West Virginia. Need I say more? Great athlete, great motor, great chance to start next year. Film is impressive, he is smart, instinctive, and he makes tackles in bunches. Weis forged a relationship with him at Florida and snuck him into Lawrence for a visit. Get them on campus, open their eyes, and they will come.

4. WR Josh Ford- The wide receivers were non-existent, and now they get a major boost from the JUCO ranks. Ford has pro potential written all over him: size, speed, strength. Here's to him living up to it. I love the way he blocks, by the way.

5. DT Jordan Tavai- Highly recruited DT from JUCO, Tavai could arguably be the biggest addition (pun intended) to the class. Remember James McClinton? He is explosive and garnered late interest from Cal and other Pac 12 schools.

6. DT Ty McKinney- Size and strength. This isn't rocket science. I expect him to see the field by October at the latest.

7. DB Greg Allen- Aqib Talib reincarnated? Let's hope.

8. WR Justin McCay- With hardship, McCay becomes the 3rd best addition. Without it, and we have to wait a year to see him in action. He is a tall target, but he isn't your typical wide-out. McCay has some bulk, so I assume that he will be effective on quick slants across the middle of the field. You would also think that with his speed, McCay would be a deep threat. I am a little hesitant to say that at this juncture, only time will tell. Regardless, this is a great, local pickup.

9. TE Charles Brooks Jr.- Pass catcher with a chip on his shoulder. Although he is still fairly new to football, Weis is drooling. Hold out hope that he will succeed, if not for a couple years learning the schemes.

10. QB Turner Baty- Could very well be the best quarterback on the roster come spring ball. He has won championships at every level he has played, and he is your prototype in size. After all, Michigan and Oklahoma showed strong interest in him. My have things changed for this offense.

11. WR/DB Tre Parmalee- A smart, finesse-type football player that has the tools to be great. What he lacks in speed, he makes up for in precise route running. This kid is really growing on me by the day, sporting KU gear everywhere he goes. Expect 4 to 5 years of concentrated hard work.

12. LB Courtney Arnick- Infrared homing missile that just so happened to play football. Seriously, watch this kid's film, it's scary. Screams upside.

13. DT Tyler Holmes- More size, but in a younger body. The kid needs a red-shirt and some more weight training before he just gets thrown to the wolves. He came from a high-school that rarely produces top-tier talent, so recruiting services and recruiters alike considered him a cut below the top defensive linemen. I would go to battle for this kid. I think he has a chance to be great.

14. OL Brian Beckmann- Love the Kansas boys, love his size, but needs to improve quickness. He can play right guard or tackle.

15. DE Keon Stowers- I'm a broken record: size.

16. TE Jordan Smith- Just a good looking athlete with a non-stop motor. Red-shirt him and watch him grow under Brooks, Smiley, and Mundine. Expect his smarts and work ethic to pay dividends.

17. RB Taylor Cox- Cox played for a terrible Juco in Weed, CA, where he became the workhorse, carrying the ball 456 times in 2 years and 30 times a game sometimes. He was the focal point for the offense, so he was the same for opposing defenses. The fact that his productivity didn't diminish from year 1 to year two is impressive. The fact that his numbers improved is astounding. I like him; Weis loves him. Listen to Coach.

18. DB Nasir Moore- Depth, depth, depth! Moore has got some wheels and with the help of Dave Campo, he could develop into a nice little steal.

19. ATH Tyree Williams- (See Moore)

20. OL Sean Connolly- For having played at a high school that was so highly recruited by the Big 10, Big East, and ACC, Connolly really, really SLID under the radar. He has a lot of room to grow, but don't expect to see him on the field for a couple of years.

So, now that I gave you that superficial breakdown, let's now look at each player, sans the transfers, a tad more closely. Enjoy.

Kansas beat out Morgan Scalley and Utah for Allen’s services. To the untrained eye, it’s not that significant, but given the fact that Scalley is one of the best defensive backs coaches in America, and the Utes are now Pac-12 contenders… it’s huge!

He wasn’t overlooked by Scalley, but he was overlooked by practically the rest of the nation. Allen really went under the radar until late in his senior year, mostly because he is still pretty new to football. He started playing late in high school (because he was really quite good at track and that consumed most of his time) and, physically speaking, he is your typical late-bloomer who still has a lot of room for growth and development. His frame is great for a corner and he can sustain additional bulk if need be. He has good range and coverage skills; he is explosive and a gifted athlete. In all honesty, he could start as early as this coming fall. Kansas isn’t particularly talented in the secondary and Allen is. It was a perfect marriage.

Courtney Arnick- LB from Dallas, TX

6’2”, 200 lb, 4.5 40 yd

KU Bio: A three-star linebacker according to Rivals.com ... Rated the 13th best linebacker in the Dallas Metro area by the Dallas Morning News ... Earned unanimous first team District 11-4A honors following his senior season ... Had a 60-yard fumble return for a touchdown in his school's `Super Bowl' rivalry game against Kimball HS during his senior season ... Named to ESPN Dallas/Fort Worth's, District 11-4A's, 2011 Preseason watch list ... Served as team captain as a senior ... Coached by Patrick Willams at Carter HS ... Also competed in track and field, where he placed second at the district meet in the discus and fourth in the shot put as a junior ... An excellent student, ranks seventh in his graduating class at Carter and is the senior class vice president ... Also considered Boise State, Houston, Colorado State and Memphis ... Son of Carla and Curlie Arnick ... Yes, he is pretty trim for a linebacker (and that might be why he landed in Kansas’s lap and not at a bigger school), but he is a fast, heat-seeking missile. Give him a few years under Scott Holsopple and Co. and then he will blow up.

Turner Baty- QB from San Francisco, CA (JUCO)

6’2”, 225, 4.7 40 yd

Baty is a really unique case. He only played one year of JUCO football, so he slid under the radar and found   an opportunity in Lawrence where he gets 4 years to play 3. He has a quick, compact throwing motion. He is very accurate (a really nice arm), mobile in the pocket, and he has good decision making skills. One thing you might notice from his film is that he can ad-lib when needed. Maybe not on Todd Reesing's level, but still.
Baty has made it clear that is not coming in to backup anybody; instead, he is here to compete and win a starting job. With Dayne Crist transferring to KU for just one year, I expect that the starting job is his to lose, so you expect Baty to red-shirt this year, but from then on, it’s anybody’s game. Jake Heaps will have to win the job come 2013.

Weis came in mid-December, and in a matter of months, the quarterback position went from a major concern to a real strength… with depth. It’s covered for at least 4 years now, and next year’s class can focus on the high school talent pool.

A local kid, Beckmann has a really strong upper body and the size and athleticism to play guard at this level. He is a particularly good run blocker and if he can improve his initial quickness and agility, he could end up playing tackle. With that said, few linemen can come in and start as a true Freshman, so slap a red-shirt by his name, lock him in the weight room and fill up that big frame; the kid has potential for growth.

An athletic, pass-catching tight end, Brooks will give Kansas another weapon on the outside.I love this kid's upside. Like Allen, Brooks started playing football late in his high-school career, so he is still learning the nuances of the game.

While Cox does nothing exceptionally well, saying he can’t come in for significant snaps would be fallacious because he does everything well at the same time. Every move he makes and every cut he makes has a purpose. Worst case scenario, he provides depth after Darrian Miller’s departure. Best case scenario, he provides Kansas a nice change-of-pace to the other three backs and finds the end-zone often.

I'll go out on a fairly sturdy limb, let's don Miles the gem of the 2012 class. He plays aggressive, downhill defense, he has great initial quickness and agility. From the looks of it on film, he is really productive when blizting up the middle. He is good against both the run and pass and he has tremendous size and athleticism for the position.
