Surprise! KU finds DC; Staff Completed

Source: Bleacher Report
It's only fitting that Dave Campo comes to Lawrence as the new defensive coordinator. Wait, what? Dave Campo? Fitting? Well, yes. With regards to Kansas Football, we have learned (of late) to expect the unexpected. After all, when Charlie Weis was hired in December, it came as a surprise to all of the pundits, myself including. Names like Fedora, Dykes, and Malzahn were the frontrunners, not Weis...right? Campo's hiring also comes as a surprise to Jayhawk fans, who planned on either Al Groh, Jim Leavitt, or Willie Martinez. News is good, and although it seems to be out of the blue, when it is all said and done, Kansas fans should be pleasantly surprised.

Due to time constraints, I will be writing this blog at a later date, but for now, check out kuathletics.com at 3:00 PM today for coverage of Charlie Weis's press-conference. From the sounds of it, he will be discussing the incoming transfers and the start of practice.

Now I know for most, the main focal point of the evening is at 8:30 PM, when the basketball team takes on undefeated Baylor in Allen Fieldhouse, but for us football junkies, 3:00 is just as awesome. Enjoy.

UPDATE (1.19.12 @ 11:00 AM)
Weis completes staff by hiring DeMontie Cross as linebackers coach.

UPDATE
Although it has been almost 30 years since he coached at the collegiate level (1987-88 Miami Hurricane Defensive Secondary Coach), I think it is safe to say that we will take the good with the bad (he won a National Championship and led one of the stingiest defenses in college football, going 23-1 in two seasons). Campo was also a part of 3 Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys. Campo coached for the Iowa State Cyclones in the early 80's, so he does have some connections with the Big 12 area. Regardless of whether he knows the Midwest, Campo knows football. He has been coaching since 1971.

Expect the secondary to take big steps in the right direction this fall, possibly as early as this spring. While spring ball won't tell us everything, or much for that matter, we should still be able to see a better coached defense right away. Great addition by Coach Weis.
